Today students learned about our solar systems location in the Milky Way galaxy. They read about some of the features of our galaxy as well and diagrammed it in IAN. Tomorrow they will use that information to make a model of our position in the galaxy.
CLASSWORK / HOMEWORK: They needed to answer the 3 review questions from the article we read in class. If they did not finish, I have those questions under Science Resources (Unit 1) and it should be finished as homework. (Most finished!) They also need to create 5 questions regarding the formation of the universe. They can ask questions about the Big Bang or String Theory. They should skip lines in between the questions as their classmates will answer the questions tomorrow. Today I gave out the first set of astronomy vocabulary. They will have time to work on it in class throughout the unit. However, they may work on it at home as well by using the online text. I discourage them 'Googeling' the answers as they may not learn the words in the correct science context. There will be 2 sets of astronomy vocabularies and they both will be due September 1st. This is a great way for students to learn time management skills.

We have finished our procedures, lab safety, and scientific method. Students took a test over it on Monday. All and all, they did really well. If they received less than an 80%, I am allowing them to do test corrections. They must write the correct answer and state why the answer is correct. I encourage them to use their notes as the test came directly from the notes.
This week we are starting astronomy and are beginning with the formation of the universe. We are discussing the Big Bang and String Theory. The kids are very fascinated with the Einsteins' E=MC2 and what it actually means. We may have some budding theoretical scientists among us. We are also discussing how discoveries are directly dependent on the the development of technology. This idea will also come into play later in the week as we study early models of the solar system. The students have done a great job! They are attentive and engaged. We have been learning about class room procedures and lab safety. They may have homework if they did not finish the lab safety cartoon in class. Tomorrow we will be learning about scientific method by way of a really cool demonstration. (Ask your kids what their hypothesis was; I bet they were wrong).
If you have not sent in a 100 sheet notebook, please do so as soon as possible. Students will be gluing in their notes tomorrow or Friday. Test next week: We will have a short test over classroom procedures, lab safety, and scientific method on Monday. Students have all the information they need to do AMAZING. It will be a positive way to begin the semester. Awesome opportunity: All students were offered the opportunity to enter an essay contest to few the solar eclipse on August 21st. Please go over the information with your child! |
