First of all, a HUGE thank you to all of you AMAZING parents that donated Oreo's for our activity today. The kids are going to create the moon phases using the cookies. Yes, they will eat them when finished. (I apologize in advance for the sugar rush you will have to contend with this afternoon). Today will finish up moon phases. The kids are doing really well with it so I am speeding through. We will be starting eclipses tomorrow and I expect that to move quickly as well. However, seasons in a different story. We will begin seasons on Friday. I expect to take a good 3-4 days. They may surprise me, they often do, and we may finish faster.
As always, don't forget to check the Science Units tab for videos and resources.

We are beginning our next unit: Relative position of the Moon, Earth, and Sun. We will be learning about moon phases, eclipses, tides, and seasons. This is a fast unit so we will be moving quickly.
This week: Today we did a class demonstration on moon phases. Students used a model to create moon phases and see how it changes. Tomorrow we will debrief. We will be learning about moon phases for the rest of the week. Donations needed: Next week we will be conducting an activity using Oreo's. I would appreciate any supplies you would like to donate to the classroom. Students love edible labs... As most of you know by now, we will not be having school Monday or Tuesday of this week. We will be experiencing weather that is very rare for Georgia. Most of you have not experienced this type of weather, especially in the metro Atlanta area. Please take note of what you see and experience. We will be discussing weather soon and the next few days are great examples of weather in action. As I have said in the past, Earth Science is not just learned in the classroom, it must be experienced!
Be safe, see you Wednesday. Tomorrow we will have our Unit test over astronomy. Please review your study guide and complete the small body worksheet. You will have a 25 question test with 5 question constructed response. I know you will do awesome! Don't forget you have awesome videos to review as well.
Today we finished the information on small bodies in the solar system. The kids REALLY enjoyed talking about comets and meteors. They especially liked asking 'what if' questions. (ie. What if an asteroid hit Earth? What if a comet hit the sun? What if and asteroid knocked the moon out of orbit?) As you can imagine, we had some interesting conversations.
Extra Credit: I gave some impromptu options for extra credit. They could write a short story about a 'what if'. They would have to talk about gravity, inertia, mass, and how those items would affect a 'what if' situation. I also offered to accept extra credit if they wanted to write a spoof of a song relating to meteors, asteroids or comets. (I have one on Unit 1 resources if you would like to take a look.) Due next week: Planet Project is due Tuesday - at the beginning of class Vocabulary is due Tuesday - please use the online text book (log on information to the right) Study guide is due Wednesday Unit test is Thursday! |
